I’ve been an archaeologist for most of my working life, and also spent six years working for the television programme Time Team. Looking at the past has shown me that society can change - we don’t have to live in the way we always have. With courage and conviction, we can build a better world.
I joined the Green Party because I was fed up with politicians not keeping their promises and not working for the common good. Our old-fashioned winner-takes-all voting system allows parties elected on a small percentage of the vote to impose extreme policies. Theresa May is forcing through her vision of Brexit, and she won’t let us vote on the deal she eventually agrees.
At the last election, the Conservatives won half the votes in Suffolk, but got all the county’s seats in Parliament. This gives them no incentive to make our lives better. So the housing crisis continues, NHS funding is cut in real terms, air pollution carries on killing, and Theresa May can bring back grammar schools. None of this is popular, but because power is in the wrong hands, it goes ahead anyway. Suffolk needs a change.
The most important thing that the Green Party stands for is the natural environment, on which all our lives depend. We are the only party fighting hard against climate change, which already threatens our way of life and the peace of the world. Support for the Green Party has a powerful impact on the national debate; every vote for the Greens highlights the need for social and environmental justice.
