Lib Dems step aside for Bury St Edmunds Green Party candidate

7 November 2019

The Green Party will field the only Remain candidate for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket in the upcoming General Election.

As a result of an electoral arrangement negotiated with input from the local parties, the local Liberal Democrat candidate has stepped down. It means Helen Geake will run uncontested by another Remainer on 12 December.

Helen Geake, a district councillor in Mid Suffolk who lives in Woolpit, said: “Leaving the EU would be deeply damaging for both our economy and our environment. Greens are willing to work with other parties for the common good, and this is the right thing to do for people in this constituency.”

The Green Party made massive gains across England and Wales this year, with the number of local councillors doubled both in Mid Suffolk and across the country. At the EU elections the number of MEPs rose, with the first East of England Green MEP, Catherine Rowett.

Helen continued: “As well as being the Remain candidate for the area, I will take the bold action on climate chaos that’s urgently needed, and continue to hold the other parties to account on environmental policy.”
