Newts not to blame for housing holdups

9 July 2020

Dear Editor,
Just in case anyone believes the prime minister's rhetoric about newts holding up house building, I would like to assure everyone locally that Mid Suffolk District Council now has more than 5000 homes with planning permissions outstanding waiting for builders to arrive.
The government has already tilted the playing field to such an extent that we on the planning committees struggle to uphold the wishes of those who live with our decisions and very rarely refuse permission for more than the most unsustainable applications. With even more constraints stripped away, we will be obliged to approve more unpopular and environmentally damaging developments.
Those in greatest housing need cannot afford to buy, so builders do not build. Newts are not to blame.

Yours sincerely

Green Party Councillor John Matthissen
