More vision needed for Needham as house building to start on car park

19 July 2020

Councillor John Matthissen, Shadow Portfolio for Economy, said:

“We welcome that work has started on developing this site which has stood empty for nearly 3 years. Also the opening of the temporary car park off Barretts Lane to replace the parking provision we have now lost, although it is my strong impression that many Needham residents would have preferred building work to begin on the empty former council building first (unlikely for a further 18 months to 2 years). The plans for a new supermarket will also undoubtedly bring benefits to the town, although located a little way from the main retail area.

“The station improvements, for which local residents campaigned over several years, will greatly enhance connectivity between the town centre and Needham Lake, with its range of leisure attractions and twice-weekly car boot sale. Regrettably, however, there has been little indication so far of a genuine ‘vision’ to draw together the full range of elements of the town and connect them to the historic core, such as the Chalk Pits development and the Lion Barn industrial area. Not all the planned housing development has been welcomed by local residents, and traffic in the high street will inevitably increase combined with the loss of Hurstlea Road car park. As Shadow Economy Portfolio-holder I would like to see a commitment to restoring and improving bus services around the estates, adequate parking provision away from the busy High Street, and improved cycle links in particular to adjacent villages such as Barking, Baylham, Claydon and Creeting St Mary.”
