Planning is not the problem stopping houses being built

6 August 2020

In response to the Government Planning white paper, Green Party Planning spokesperson Councillor Andrew Stringer said:Affordable homes

The issues surrounding delivery of the houses we need are a structural economic problem not a local democratic one. Tearing up the current plans, to basically concrete over the land that produces our food, is economic and environmental suicide.

The stated aim of carbon neutral homes by 2050 is laughable, as this time frame makes it at least 20 years too late, and 34 years after our agreed target. Do not forget this country was going to build to a carbon neutral standard by 2016, until David Cameron’s “bonfire of regulations” halted progress.

In Mid Suffolk we have around 7000 homes approved but not built. Across the country this figure is 1 million homes, this is 1 million homes with planning permission that are not being built. If the Government was truly concerned with delivering these homes, then local authorities would be encouraged to invest in local housing rather than speculative commercial investments. The only time when this country has ever fulfilled its housing targets was when local authorities played a major part in constructing them.”
