An application for 86 new homes on School Road Elmswell was deferred by MSDC planning committee on Wednesday. Local Green Party councillors Helen Geake and Sarah Mansel feel that this application pushes the traffic situation at Church Road/School Road junction too far.
One of the benefits proposed by the developer is to create a shared cycle and pedestrian path along the side of a newly widened School Road, but this would mean that a large oak tree in its prime would be destroyed.
Following the insistence of the Green Party councillors the application was deferred for more work to be done about both the road junction and the possible realigning of School Road to save the tree.
Speaking afterwards, Cllr Mansel said;
Whilst I would welcome the creation of part of the cycle link between Elmswell and Woolpit, it is imperative that the tree is preserved. The environmental benefits of more people cycling are outweighed by any biodiversity loss if the tree were to be felled.
