Green and Liberal Democrats vote on Local Plan

12 November 2020

Greens and Liberal Democrats vote to move Local Plan forward, with reservations.

Today Mid Suffolk debated the long awaited second draft of its joint local plan. Along with neighbourhood plans, this is the blueprint for how councils will meet the increasing house building numbers demanded by Government.

Councillor Andrew Stringer said:

This plan contains some of the most up to date policies for achieving not just the housing numbers target, but also the climate and biodiversity challenges that we simply must meet.

“While we welcome the sustainability and wildlife improvements this plan tries to deliver, we have serious concerns about the focus of housing along the A14, with a small handful of villages being asked to accept the majority of housing yet lacking sufficient infrastructure and services needed for sustainability.

“Our Group was pleased to be part of the discussions to formulate the updated policies within this document, as our current local plan is considered out of date. Our communities have been exposed to development shaped by the bottom line of developers, not the democratically agreed aspirations of communities. The previous Conservative administration did not respond to our calls to speed up plan preparation, leading to repeated delays.

“Because of the constant moving of the goalposts by central Government, many of the site allocations identified in the plan already have planning permission and are being built.”

Liberal Democrat Councillor John Field added:

"Our Group will give reluctant support as further delay would allow even more developer-led expansion, instead of plan-led growth with communities in control. We will continue to seek improvements to the plan through its remaining stages."
