Greens & Lib Dems oppose pay freeze

26 November 2020

Statement on behalf of Green & Liberal Democrat Group at Mid Suffolk District Council

Green and Liberal Democrat councillors deplore the chancellor freezing the pay of council staff who have gone beyond the call of duty in delivering both council services and a tremendous response to the pandemic, despite the dramatic changes in the way that they have been required to work. For some this has necessitated working from home, which could completely disrupt family life or result in loneliness for staff who live alone. Our Building Services staff have continued to carry out essential maintenance work and urgent repairs, often putting themselves at risk by working in tenants’ properties and residential establishments.

If Government needs income at this time, they should increase taxes for those higher earners who have been fortunate to maintain or increase their income during the crisis.
