Greens Hold Haughley Council Seat With Clear Majority

In a by-election held to fill the Mid-Suffolk Council vacancy caused by the sad death of outstanding councillor Rachel Eburne, the Green Party took 64% of the vote, a clear majority over the other parties standing.

The Green Party candidate, Dr Agnes Watson, will represent the villages of Haughley Stowupland, Old Newton Wetherden and Gipping, serving alongside Councillor Janet Pearson.

New councillor Agnes Watson is a very recently retired anaesthetist who lives in Haughley and will join the team of 22 other Green councillors who have been running Mid-Suffolk for the last two years.

Dr Watson said:

” I am really grateful to the voters in these villages who have elected me to represent them on the council. I have been inspired by the previous councillor, Rachel Eburne, and I hope to follow her example by working hard for everyone.”

Council leader Andy Mellen, welcoming Agnes, said :

“Recent by-elections around the county have seen a big swing to the Green Party, although not quite enough to win. Here we were defending a large majority, and our record running the council, and it is heartening to know that the public are still behind us.”
