County’s official opposition responds to school transport withdrawal

Some Taxis have cancelled their contracts to take pupils to school. Green Party councillor responds

Green Party Cllr Caroline Topping Suffolk GLI Spokesperson for Education and Child Protection, said:

"It is crucial that this Council acts with the greatest level of urgency. The first few weeks in the new school year are highly important in enabling young people to form their friendships and get into the routines which set them up for the year.

"Children and Young People have already had their lives completely disrupted throughout lockdown, and we have seen the effects this has both in development and for the long-term.

"We cannot afford to disrupt their education any further.  We need to take a careful look at school transport, make sure we can get our young people to school and do all we can to stop this happening again, which is a possibility as the cost of provision of school transport, fuel and staff costs are likely to increase further as the cost of living increases.

"As Vice Chair of Education Scrutiny I have conversed with the Chairman and I will ask for it to go on an agenda if the situation is not resolved."

GLI is the Green, Lib Dem and Independent group, the official opposition on Suffolk County Council.
