How to apply for a postal vote

For elections on 2 May 2024 all voters must show photographic identification at the polling station before being issued with a ballot paper.

To vote by post in the elections on 2 May 2024 your completed form must be received by the registration office no later than 5pm on Wednesday 17 April.

You need to provide your date of birth and signature on the form. These are later compared with the signature and date of birth you submit with your ballot papers to ensure that they have been completed by the correct person. They do not identify how you have cast your vote.

If you are unable to provide a signature for any reason you should indicate this on the form as you may be eligible for a signature waiver.

Please provide details of anyone who assists you in completing the form. It is not possible for someone else to apply for a postal vote on your behalf or to sign the form on your behalf.

The form also asks you to specify how long you wish to vote by post.

You can apply for a postal vote at any time during the year, however there is a deadline by which postal vote applications must be received in advance of an election.

To vote in person, you'll need photo ID, but if you don't have this, you'll need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate and will need to phone the council on 0300 123 4000 or apply online.

You can make it super easy for yourself by applying for a postal vote and you'll get your voting papers two weeks before polling day, allowing you to vote while comfortably at home, and drop your vote into a post box at your convenience.
